[01:20:14] farinacci joins the room
[01:20:38] <farinacci> Why don’t we have DNS over IP, DNS over ethernet, DNS over VXLAN?
[01:20:53] <farinacci> because we don’t need to and it is architecturally wrong
[01:20:57] <farinacci> same goes for NSH
[01:22:04] <akatlas> I hear you.   Joel's point on general considerations for congestion and security aspects is interesting and a good approach.
[01:23:09] <farinacci> Alia, that all happens inside of NSH, in its protocol spec, in whatever working group you think it should go in
[01:25:03] <akatlas> UDP does make it trivial for NSH to be forwarded arbitrarily in the internet in a way that mpls, for instance, does not.
[01:25:28] <akatlas> Dino, but generally I agree with you.  There are nuances.
[01:25:33] <farinacci> then GPE can encapsulate NSH packets with type 0x01 rather than type 0x04 (where 0x04 is a code point explicitly for NSH). GPE doesn’t have a code point for DNS? ;-)
[01:25:36] Yuji Sekiya joins the room
[01:26:21] <farinacci> Alia, SNMP does routing you know  ;-) it routes email messages, so any logical hops or nuances NSH needs to do is in its own layer
[01:27:29] <akatlas> @Dino:  the attack surface is different depending on the transport.  That's where more clarity may be needed.
[01:28:12] <farinacci> it was decided a long time ago that MPLS was a network layer (arguably a layer 2.5 technology) and it was never considered to run over UDP. If it had, we wouldn’t have specific code points for MPLS in GPE (an ID update for GPE was posted yesterday adding an MPLS code point)
[01:28:42] <farinacci> each transport needs to be secure, and when it is, it will be for NSH as well
[01:30:18] <akatlas> And yet, we have an RFC for MPLS-in-UDP which required considerable thought on congestion control aspects, at least, to articulate applicability.
[01:30:39] <akatlas> but we should probably talk off-line (er, in person?) and focus on this presentation.
