[14:11:04] <Benno Overeinder> Thank you Peter. Bringing the policies to the RIR meetings (like RIPE), would that work?

[14:13:03] <muks> hmm
[14:14:37] <muks> Bloom filters work well for applications where false positives are OK, but false negatives are not.
[14:14:39] Paul Hoffman joins the room
[14:15:03] Paul Hoffman leaves the room
[14:15:10] <muks> For example, if you want a nameserver to filter queries to most names that you've not seen in the previous week, you can use a bloom filter for it. A name that maps to all 1s will pass the filter and return an answer. A name that does not map to all 1s will not pass the filter and will be filtered.
[14:15:51] <muks> In such an application, names that were previously seen will ALWAYS match. There's no chance of a false negative. SOME names that were not previously seen will also pass the filter becaues they also map to all 1s. There is a chance of false positives, but that is OK for this application as you want to filter "most names that are not seen in the previous week". This is acceptable for such a query filter.
[14:16:14] <muks> Example of this is the unbound bloomfilter branch
[14:16:36] Benno Overeinder leaves the room: Disconnected: closed
[14:16:47] Geng Li joins the room
[14:17:31] <danyork> muks: is that side conversation or are you seeking relay to the mic?
[14:17:58] whatdafuq joins the room
[14:19:52] <muks> danyork: From the presentation, it is unclear how the author intends to _use_ bloom filtered names, especially for checking if some query was performed before, because there's no guarantee for lack of false positives. The bloom filter might tell you that somename.example.org was queried when it was not.
[14:20:06] DavidSchinazi joins the room
[14:20:21] Melinda leaves the room
